The British Muslim story is a rich tapestry of faith, migration, resilience, and contribution. From early Yemeni sailors settling in port towns, to the vibrant, diverse Muslim communities today—Islam’s journey in Britain is both historic and evolving.

Fatima's story is no exception to this. She was an inspired visionary. In a time of harassment and resistance—including attempts to strip away her faith—she stood firm. While no verified clear photograph exists, this artistic rendering honours her legacy: a steadfast pioneer in the history of Islam in Britain.

Born Frances Elizabeth Murray on 5th January 1865 in Birkenhead, England into a strict Christian family. The city of Birkenhead was one of the busiest ports in the British Empire.

By the age of 19, she had become a temperance activist and was the secretary of the Association of Prohibition of Alcohol in Birkenhead. Her position led her to a talk by Abdullah Quilliam, a local lawyer who had converted to Islam during a trip to Morocco. Fatima would later describe that she was "in doubt as to the true faith" when she heard Abdullah speak, so she posed him a series of tough questions about Islam. In response, he gave her a translation of the Quran, saying: "Don't believe what I say or what anyone else says; study the matter out for yourself." In July 1887, she took the shahada and changed her name to Fatima, after Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ daughter.

Two years later, Abdullah Quilliam, Fatima and other converts founded the first recorded mosque in England. Fatima was elected as its first treasurer.

In 1889, she married marine engineer Hubert Henry Cates at the Cathedral Church of St. Peter in Liverpool. Hubert was at first adverse to her faith, but she managed to convince him, and her two sisters, Annie and Clara, to embrace Islam.

Fatima Cates died on 29th October 1900, at the age of 35. She requested Abdullah Quilliam to conduct her funeral. Cates was buried at Anfield Cemetery in Liverpool.

Fatima's life exemplifies the power of faith and community service. Through her unwavering commitment to her faith and her philanthropic efforts, she serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for many, demonstrating how one individual can foster unity and compassion within a diverse society.
